1. An Old Dehumidifier

Older portable dehumidifiers can use a surprising amount of electricity, especially when they run for hours at a time in a damp basement. If yours seems to run constantly without making the space feel noticeably drier, it may be time to compare its energy use and actual capacity with a newer model.

2. A Dirty HVAC Filter

A clogged filter makes it harder for air to move through your heating and cooling system. That can reduce comfort and force the blower to work longer to circulate cooled air.

3. The Second Refrigerator

That extra refrigerator in the basement or garage may be convenient, but older units can be major energy users. If it holds little more than a few drinks and expired condiments, ask whether the convenience is worth powering it all year.

Your freezer has to work harder when the surrounding air is hot. A garage that climbs well into the 80s or 90s can make your freezer/fridge run much longer than it would in a cooler space.

Consider moving it to a basement or another temperature-controlled space when possible. This can reduce energy use and reduce wear & tear on the appliance. Additionally, make sure there is enough airflow around the appliance and that the door seals tightly.

5. Incandescent Light Bulbs

Traditional incandescent bulbs turn much of the electricity they use into heat instead of light. That means you are paying to warm the room while your AC is paying to cool it again.

Replacing frequently used bulbs with LEDs can reduce both electricity use and unwanted indoor heat.

6. Fans Running in Empty Rooms

Ceiling fans and portable fans cool people, not rooms. They create a wind-chill effect that helps your skin feel cooler, but they do not lower the actual room temperature.

When everyone leaves the room, turn the fan off. Otherwise, it is just spinning through your electric bill.
