What is Geothermal Technology?

Geothermal technology utilizes the Earth’s heat to provide heating and cooling to homes. Just a few feet below the surface, the Earth maintains a near-constant temperature, in contrast to the summer and winter extremes of the ambient air above ground. Farther below the surface, the temperature increases at an average rate of approximately 1°F for every 70 feet in depth. In some regions, tectonic and volcanic activity can bring higher temperatures and pockets of superheated water and steam much closer to the surface. (Source: www.epa.gov)

How Geothermal Systems Work

Geothermal energy, like solar, is considered a renewable resource. Ground source heat pumps and direct use geothermal systems are used for heating and cooling.

The earth absorbs about 50% of the sun’s energy and stores it in the ground. During colder months, geothermal system sucks the heat from the ground, converts it into warm air, then circulates it into your home. In the summer, the geothermal system reverses the process; it pulls the heat out of your home and transfers it to the ground. This ground source heating and cooling system consists of a heat pump connected to a series of buried pipes filled with water solution.

Benefits of Geothermal Systems

Geothermal systems present several advantages over conventional furnaces and air conditioners.

A geothermal system will cut your heating costs by 30-60% and you will save 20-50% on your cooling expenses. There is no onsite combustion involved in the process. Therefore, there are no emissions of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and other hazardous greenhouse gases. You will rid your family of the dangers of accidental fires or carbon monoxide poisoning.

In addition to these benefits, geothermal systems provide consistent temperature throughout your home. Never again will you have hot and cold spots in your house! Also, geothermal systems enhance air quality by delivering better air purification and dehumidification versus traditional heating and cooling systems. Since the air that circulates in your home is clean, you and your family can avoid the negative effects of poor air quality on your health.

Unlike traditional furnaces or air conditioners, geothermal systems do not require noisy outdoor units. The indoor unit is generally as loud as a refrigerator. Setting the installation costs aside, geothermal systems can help you save money in the long run. Typical furnaces and air conditioners will last you about 10-15 years; while a geothermal system can last about 25 years on indoor components and over 50 years for the ground loop. The system has few moving parts and is safe from outdoor elements; making it a lot easier to maintain.
