The Cooler Method: How to Keep Your Home Cool Without Touching the Thermostat

June in Wisconsin gives homeowners a pretty sweet setup: warm, sunny days and cool, refreshing nights. It’s not unusual for daytime highs to reach the 80s while overnight temperatures drop into the 50s. That creates a great opportunity to cool your home naturally and give your air conditioner a lighter workload before the heat of the day sets in.

We like to call it The Cooler Method.

Think of your home like a cooler. Overnight, when the outdoor air is cool, open your windows and use fans to pull that fresh air inside. If you can create a cross-breeze, even better. This helps flush out warmer indoor air and replace it with cooler nighttime air.

Then, in the morning, “close the lid.” Shut your windows before outdoor temperatures start climbing, close blinds or curtains on sun-facing windows, and keep that cool air trapped inside as long as possible. Done right, this can help your home stay comfortable well into the afternoon before your AC needs to step in.

Here’s a real-life example: one of our team members recently used The Cooler Method on a cool summer night with temps dropping into the upper 50s and woke up to a 62-degree home. After closing the windows and blinds in the morning before leaving for work, the house was still only around 67 degrees by the time they got home from work in the late afternoon, even with outdoor temperatures in the low-to-mid 80s. Their thermostat was set to 69, so the AC didnt run until around 6:00pm.

The Cooler Method is a simple way to reduce energy use, limit unnecessary wear and tear on your AC, and stay comfortable without constantly adjusting the thermostat.

A Few More Ways to Keep the Cool In

Close blinds during peak sun. Sun-facing windows can warm up a room fast, especially in the afternoon.

Use ceiling fans correctly. In summer, ceiling fans should usually spin counterclockwise to create a cooling breeze. Just remember, fans cool people, not rooms.

Avoid heat-producing appliances midday. Ovens, dryers, and other appliances can add extra heat inside your home. Use them earlier in the morning or later in the evening when possible.

Seal small air leaks. Small gaps around windows, doors, and attic access points can let warm air sneak in and cooled air escape.

When to Skip It

The Cooler Method works best when the overnight air is actually cooler and not too humid. If your home starts feeling sticky or damp, close the windows and let your AC help control the humidity. The same goes if it’s rainy, smoky, or heavy with pollen outside.

Cool nights can help your AC work less. Regular maintenance helps make sure it works well when you need it most.
