Southeastern Wisconsin saw record flooding on Aug. 9–10, 2025, after hours of torrential rain. Northern and western Milwaukee County, and Eastern Waukesha County, including Wauwatosa, West Allis, Menomonee Falls, Elm Grove, and New Berlin, were hit the hardest.

Events like this remind us that while you can’t control the weather or completely floodproof your home, you can reduce the odds of a basement disaster. Here’s a quick guide on what can be done to help protect your home—focused on what actually works for Southeastern Wisconsin homes.

This month’s Technician Tip comes as a request from reader Bill B:
“I have a water softener and see conflicting advice on which type of salt to use. I’ve always used pellets as I’ve heard that they are higher purity & cause less sludge buildup than crystals. What do you recommend, and why?”

“Hey Bill,
Ben R. (Master Plumber) here. Great question, and thank you for writing!

My advice is to first check your owner’s manual to be sure your unit doesn’t require a specific type of salt.
Solar salt crystals and pellets are both commonly used in water softeners. As you pointed out, salt pellets are a tick higher in purity (99.8% vs 99.6%). However, most plumbing professionals use and recommend salt crystals for a couple of reasons.
Number one, solar salt tends to dissolve more evenly in the brine tank. This reduces the likelihood of “mushing” and leads to better brine production. Two, solar salt is less expensive than pellets, sometimes by as much as $2.00 or $3.00 per bag at some retail stores.”
