Ice dams can wreak havoc on your home. An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of your roof and in your gutters which prevents melting snow from properly draining off the roof.
Ice dams can cause water to backfeed under your shingles allowing water to leak into your home. This can cause mold, and damage to walls, ceilings, insulation, and other areas.
How to Prevent Ice Dams:
Rake snow: Use a roof rake to remove excess snow from the edges of your roof after heavy snowfall.
Insulate: Inadequate insulation allows heat from the interior to escape through the roof. Therefore, melting snow, which then refreezes at the colder edges of the roof.
Seal air leaks: Seal any interior airflow leaks and ventilate the attic to prevent unwanted heat loss into the attic.
Install a roof ice melt system: Roof melt systems automatically use electrical resistance heating to melt snow and prevent ice dams from forming.
Ensure good airflow: Provide airflow from the eaves to every part of the attic. This allows any heat that enters the attic to be properly vented out through ridge vents and replaced by outside air from your home’s soffit vents.
