Do you and your family prefer a live Christmas tree?
Consider these tips when picking out your tree!
Trunk Test
Start by inspecting the trunk of the tree. It should feel slightly sticky with sap, which is a good indicator of freshness. A dry or brittle trunk may signal that the tree has been cut for a while and won’t last as long.
Check the Needles
The condition of the needles is a strong indicator of a tree’s freshness. Bend a needle in half—fir tree needles should snap cleanly, while pine needles should bend without breaking. Gently grab a branch and pull your hand toward you; fresh needles will stay intact.
You can also tap the cut end of the trunk on the ground—if only a few needles fall off, the tree is fine. However, avoid trees with stiff, brittle needles that easily shed or appear dull gray-green instead of vibrant green.
Assess the Tree’s Color
A fresh tree will have a rich, vibrant green color. Some types of trees can turn dull gray-green if they’ve dried out. Err on the side of caution by choosing a tree that looks lush and green to ensure it lasts longer.
Shape and Fullness Check
Look for a tree with a full, symmetrical shape. It doesn’t have to be perfect, especially if it is placed in a corner, but dense branches and an even shape will give it a great appearance. Ideally, you shouldn’t be able to see the tree’s trunk through its branches.
