This month’s featured Technician Tip comes from Brett Z. HVAC Service Technician at Kettle Moraine Heating.
|
“Your house is naturally cooler at dusk. It’s best to run those heat-producing appliances such as your dishwasher or dryer after the sun goes down. Doing so will save you energy costs, reduce your air conditioner’s workload, and make your home more comfortable.”
|
Brett Z. has +15 years of experience in HVAC and loves helping customers with their HVAC needs.

Protect Your Home from Spontaneous Combustion
Spontaneous combustion poses a real threat when certain materials are exposed to heat and oxygen. This chemical reaction generates heat within combustible substances, and if this heat cannot dissipate, it accumulates until ignition occurs.
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reveals that approximately 14,070 fires are reported annually due to spontaneous combustion.
Among such materials are organic lawn materials like compost, leaves, grass clippings, and mulch piles. Additionally, care should be taken with oily rags that retain residues of oil-based cleaning products, paints, stains, paint thinners, varnishes, or polyurethane.
Staying Safe at Home
Store piles of organic materials away from buildings. Turn the piles over from time to time to prevent heat from building up inside the pile.
Oily rags should be stored in sealed metal containers such as a safety can or rubbish bin. If you intend to reuse these rags, it’s safe to wash them but avoid putting them in the dryer and let them air dry instead.

Thank you for reading!
We’ve been getting a lot of inquiries from our customers about their ACs. To conclude this month’s bulletin, here’s a list of answers to the most frequently asked questions.
-Bill Brink, Owner
Is it absolutely necessary to get my annual AC maintenance ahead of the summer or can I wait until after the cooling season?
There is a common misconception that your annual AC maintenance must be performed in the spring. Your annual AC maintenance can be performed any time of the year with one exception, it must be over 55 degrees outside to properly perform each step in our 17-point inspection.
I set my T-stat to a higher temperature while I am away to save energy. On hot days it takes a long time to get the temperature down to where I like it when I get home. Should I lower the away temperature if I know it will be really hot?
Yes. If you know it will be very warm, it’s best to dial it back a bit to avoid overworking your equipment and to reduce run times.
It’s 98 degrees out today but the AC won’t cool my home down to the temperature I set on the thermostat. Is something wrong?
Not necessarily. All ACs have an indoor design temperature of 18-20°F cooler than the outdoor temperature. So if it’s 98°F outside, your AC will be able to drop your indoor temp to 78-80°F inside. This could vary a few degrees, depending on your home’s insulation.
